SDP Media Release: Pre-election rally this Saturday

The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) will hold its second rally at the Speakers’ Corner in Hong Lim Park on Saturday 13 November 2010. The theme of the Rally is “It’s About You”. The event follows an earlier successful rally at the same venue held on 25 September 2010.

As in the previous Rally, SDP will introduce a few prominent political figures in Singapore on this occasion. Dr James Gomez and Dr Wong Wee Nam will be among the several speakers who will take to the stage.

Dr Gomez is no newcomer to politics in Singapore. He contested in the 2006 GE under the Workers’ Party. He is currently Deputy Associate Dean at Monash University in Australia and has been a staff member at various think-tanks and universities across the world. He founded the Think Centre in 1999 and is the Executive Director of Singaporeans for Democracy (2009). Dr Gomez will be speaking on the plight of the working poor in Singapore.

Dr Wong is a general practitioner, running his own clinic and ran as an opposition candidate in 1997 General Elections. What is lesser known about Dr Wong is that he also has a law degree from the University of London. He writes regularly for websites like Sgpolitics.net. Effectively bilingual, Dr Wong will deliver his speech in English and Chinese.

Women who form almost 50% of our population, will be represented at the Rally as well. Ms Jaslyn Go will speak in Chinese emphasizing on economic issues while addressing the subject from a mother’s viewpoint. Ms Go, a mother of two who also runs a successful business, will relate the difficulty of making ends meet with rising costs and stagnant wages.

Another interesting speaker to look out for at the Rally will be a 16 year old student, Kenneth Lin. He made headlines when he launched a petition on Facebook calling on Mr Lee Kuan Yew to apologise for saying that spurs need to be stuck into the hides of Singaporeans to make them work harder. Mr Lin was also featured in the SDP’s National Day Message this year. He will speak on his entry into politics and what motivates him to continue to speak up.

Besides the serious business of politics, the Rally also promises to be an evening of fun and laughter. The Young Democrats for their part will be throwing a rock concert entitled Rockin’ for Rights. Danny the Democracy Bear, who has been making his rounds in SDP’s walkabouts and house to house visits in various areas in Singapore, will also be making a special appearance to thrill the children and adults alike.

The 4-hour Rally and fun-filled evening will start at 4PM.
