Remembering May 21st

Photos of Remember 21st May event at Hong Lim Park

It was still very early when i stepped out of Clarke Quay MRT station’s exit/entrance overlooking Hong Lim Park. So i sat at a bench just in front of the station and just looked out at the park.

Dec 2000’s International Human Rights Day came to mind. I was with Think Centre then and it was the first public celebration of International Human Rights Day in Singapore. I took this photo on that significant and memorable day,

My colleagues from Think Centre and members of SDP with the late J B Jeyaretnam at Hong Lim Park in Dec 2000. Hong Lim Park was designated 'Speakers Corner' in Sept 2000. Click on image to enlarge.

That was then. And this is now.

Nine years later, there I was for the Remember 21st May event at Hong Lim Park aka Speakers Corner on 21 May 2009 (Thur). But this event focused specifically on the 1987 arrests, detention and torture of 22 individuals, by the Internal Security Department, who were detained without trial in Operation Spectrum under the Singapore government’s Internal Security Act.

Well here are my photos. Click on each one to literally see the BIG picture.

Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green community centre's stage area
Before the event started, there were dark clouds and a bit of rain. So the activists and the diverse mix of people who attended the event moved over to the Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green community centre’s stage area. But not for long.

It was good to see school students at the event. Like this young chap holding 'Remember May 21st 1987' brochure. Now that's National Education! :-)

Good thing the dark clouds and rain lasted a very short while. The activists move back into the open field....

The event ended with the activists & audience raising their hands with shouts of Abolish ISA. (Unfortunately, the two or three photos i took of that didn't turnout well. Damn. This is a group photo of the activists and some of the 60-80 people who took the time & effort to attend the event. :-D
